The beloved classic family drama series Gilmore Girls, which originally aired from 2000-2007 on The WB and The CW before returning for a revival on Netflix in 2016, may have focused its stories on the lives of a family of strong Gilmore women. But some of the series' main draw comes in the form of the romantic relationships it depicts within the lives of the residents of Stars Hollow.
In particular, viewers are very passionate about their favorite love interests, especially for resident Gilmore girls Lorelai and Rory. Here, we take a look back at the ten best boyfriend-worthy characters the series had to offer.
10 Marty
Rory and Marty don't exactly meet in the most conventional of circumstances. He's known as Marty the Naked Guy for a reason, after all. And while it's easy to write Marty off as a typical cliche "Nice Guy," who feels entitled to be with Rory just because they're friends, there's also no denying that Marty is a genuinely nice guy, and a good friend, too.
Good relationships are often rooted in friendships to begin with. So even if Marty wasn't the one for Rory, he would be a great boyfriend for the right person.
9 Michel Gerard
Michel is one of Stars Hollow's snarkiest and reliable residents, and for that reason alone, he makes the list of best boyfriends, as he's someone you can always depend upon to lend an ear for your complaining - though he may do a fair share of complaining on his own, too.
Though the original run of Gilmore Girls didn't spend very much time on Michel Gerard's romantic life, the revival offers a few glimpses into his life with his husband, and their intentions to adopt a baby.
8 Zack Van Gerbig
Zack is one of the more clueless love interests in the series. He doesn't start off as the prime example of a boyfriend, never mind a husband, given that he spends much of his time romancing groupies for one night only.
But when Zack and Lane become an item, Zack totally transforms into the kind of boyfriend and husband anyone would be lucky to have. He's still a little clueless, and childish to boot, but he's a faithful lover and, eventually, a great father, too.
7 Jess Mariano
It would be hard to make the case that a young Jess Mariano is prime boyfriend material. He's unreliable, closed off, and often selfish, too. But as he gets older, and becomes more mature in turn, Jess quickly becomes one of the series' most viable romantic options.
Which makes it areal shame that the show sidelines his character in its later years, and also keeps him hung up on Rory in its revival run. Jess is a warm, witty, and compassionate adult - a marked change from the brat he once was, and a great boyfriend for anyone who would want him.
6 Morey Dell
We don't get to know very much about Morey and Babette's marriage, but it's clear that it's a loving one, and perhaps one of Stars Hollow's longest running. Though Babette and Morey clearly operate on different wavelengths, Stars Hollow's resident gossip and soulful pianist are always shown as deeply in love.
So while we may not know very much about Morey, it's apparent that the very zen, very soulful, very tall and cool Morey Dell is one of Stars Hollow's best husbands.
5 Richard Gilmore
Speaking of the series' best husbands, few rank higher than Gilmore family patriarch Richard Gilmore. His marriage to Emily may have had its ups and downs, particularly during their mid-series separation, but these two were partners in every possible sense of the word.
Richard was passionate and protective, almost to a fault, and helped make all of Emily's dreams come true. He was also an incredible father and grandfather, too, proving that he was an all around great man.
4 Jackson Belleville
One of the series' other most reliable relationships is the unlikely, adorkable romance between Stars Hollow chef Sookie St. James and her produce farmer husband Jackson Belleville. Jackson is one of the quirkier, more neurotic residents of Stars Hollow, which is saying something, but he's also one of its sweetest and most romantic, too.
Though their courtship is unconventional, Jackson is clearly all in from the very beginning, and committed to their marriage and family all throughout, too, making him an enviable partner.
3 Luke Danes
Though he may seem like the gruff and silent type more often than not, Luke Danes also happens to be one of the series' gentlest souls and best boyfriends. A supportive friend, protective father, and passionate romantic underneath it all, Luke is one of the series' most beloved characters, and half of its central romance.
Beyond Lorelai, he has a few other relationships in the series, and though he often struggles with communication, Luke is always reliable, always compassionate, and always a boyfriend worth envying.
2 Dave Rygalski
Lane Kim may wind up marrying and building a family with Zack Van Gerbig, but it's her boyfriend Dave Rygalski who ranks among one of the series' best boyfriends of them all.
Dave could have easily just been a passing moment in Lane's life, a high school boyfriend who didn't mean very much. But he was a kindred spirit from the beginning, a music lover and shy geek who went to great lengths to prove his worth to Lane's mother, even if it meant staying up all night to read the Bible again and again.
1 Max Medina
Lorelai may have ended up with Luke Danes, but far and away her best boyfriend, and one of the series' best love interests bar none, was English teacher Max Medina. Charming, seductive, intelligent, and committed, Max is one of the ultimate boyfriend goals characters to come out of the early 2000s era of teen television.
Played to perfection by Scott Cohen, Max is a character that the series itself doesn't even seem to recognize how lucky it got with. It's a shame that we never got to see him be more of his own character, outside of his role as Lorelai's boyfriend. But we're more than happy to take what we can get.
