Cheaper By The Dozen Reimagining By Blackish Creator Hits Disney+ 2022

Disney's Cheaper by the Dozen reimagining from Blackish creator Kenya Barris will debut on Disney+ in 2022. The Cheaper by the Dozen concept originated with the 1948 novel of the same name. Penned by Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey, it was a partly autobiographical account of their time growing up as part of a family with twelve kids. The book received a sequel, Belles on Their Toes, in 1950 and also led to several adaptations. Among these are a stage play and musical, though the Cheaper by the Dozen movies are better known.

The first released in 1950, shortly after the novel came out. Belles on Their Toes similarly received a film adaptation in the 1950s. However, most people today associate Cheaper by the Dozen with the 2003 film and its sequel, both of which star Bonnie Hunt and Steve Martin as the parents of the brood. Though neither movie was a critical smash, they have their fans and make for good family viewing. For that reason, it didn't come as a surprise when Disney revealed its plan to reboot the Cheaper by the Dozen franchise following its acquisition of 21st Century Fox.

Though Disney made that announcement over a year ago, new information about Barris' project wasn't revealed until this week. During its Investor Day webcast, Disney revealed the Cheaper by the Dozen update will star Gabrielle Union and release on Disney+ in 2022. A specific release date wasn't given.

Though quite a bit of information about the upcoming reimaging remains unknown, the idea of a team up between Union and Barris is exciting. Both are well-established in the industry and have participated in a number of successful projects. The brief description of the new Cheaper by the Dozen bodes well, too. The 2003 movie featured a biological family rather a blended one, but the change is smart. It updates the story for a more modern audience and is also more realistic. Additionally, the family business aspect should add an interesting angle.

Since the Cheaper by the Dozen reimagining is still a couple years out, it may be awhile until the full cast is announced. The 2003 movie used mostly unknown actors for the younger children, while bigger names like Hilary Duff, Piper Perabo, and Tom Welling played the older ones. The updated version could take a similar approach, especially with Union and Barris there to anchor the project. That, coupled with Cheaper by the Dozen's name recognition, makes it likely the Disney+ reimagining will be a success.
